The Problem
School districts across the country are having an equity gap when it comes to family engagement. Multilingual families are disconnected from the conversations that most matter to them: their child’s education. At the center of the problem is poor communication in the form of a heavy dependence on tools like Google Translate to disseminate information to parents or, worse, enlisting bilingual students to interpret when difficult conversations arise. Miscommunication in these situations leads to a breakdown of trust and violations of privacy. One mid-sized urban school district reported that 40% of multilingual families attended fall conferences, compared to 78% of English-speaking families. This resulted in a persistent achievement gap. School leaders can combat this problem by putting culturally responsive communication strategies in place to honor families' languages and form meaningful partnerships.
